Flying Officer Avani Chaturvedi created history when she became the first Indian woman pilot of the Indian Air Force to complete a solo flight in a MiG-21 Bison fighter aircraft on February 19, 2018. She completed the half-an-hour long solo flight in the Russian-origin jet in the skies over Jamnagar Air Base in Gujarat by breaking yet another glass ceiling and stamped her name in golden letters in one more area of women’s emancipation. She ventured boldly in an area where Indian women had not treaded before. She did not rely on any past precedents because there were none. She proved generations of naysayers wrong who had kept on parroting that women are not fit for combat let alone in a highly specialised and demanding profession of flying complex, supersonic fighter jets. She was bold, led from the front and succeeded, blazing a shining, new path for Indian womanhood.

Sir Roger Bannister was the first man to run a mile in under four minutes. Up until he did it in 1954, most people thought the four-minute mark was impossible to break.
