She made it into\nthe prestigious IAS in her second attempt. Ms. Kumari is a B.Sc. (Honours) in\nPhysics from the prestigious Hindu College in Delhi. She has also completed an\nMBA in Finance and Marketing.&nbsp; She did\nher schooling from Shiva Shiksha Sadan in Sonipat. Ms. Kumari credits the&nbsp; secret of her success in CSE to perseverance,\ntime management and support of her family members. For General Studies and\nother papers, she consulted Competition Success Review, General Knowledge Today\nand CSR Year Book apart from online sources. According to Ms. Kumari,\nCompetition Success Review covers a wide range of subjects relevant for\npreparation, not only current affairs but also portions of CSAT. How much time do\nyou think one requires for serious preparations for this examination?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. <\/strong>One\nand a half years of dedicated preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.&nbsp;Which\njournals have you been reading for the General Studies and other papers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.<\/strong> Apart from <em>Competition\nSuccess Review, General Knowledge Today<\/em> and <em>CSR Year Book,<\/em>I\nmainly referred to online sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.&nbsp;Do you\nremember any remarkable incident in your life that motivated or prompted you to\ngo for a career in the Civil Services?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. <\/strong>Monotony\nand drudgery in private job and a feeling of meaninglessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.&nbsp;Competition\nSuccess Review, the largest selling youth magazine in English for 35 years, has\nbeen extremely helpful because<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. <\/strong>It\ncovers a wide range of subjects relevant for preparation\u2014not only current\naffairs but also CSAT portions. It also focuses on interviews of successful\ncandidates which is very helpful for aspirants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q. How did your\nparents, family and friends contribute to your success?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. <\/strong>Immense\ncontribution. My mother took care of my son. My brothers helped me with doubts\nin studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q. Had you not been\nselected in the Civil Services Examination, what would have been your reaction?\nWhich other service\/career would you have gone in\/opted for?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. <\/strong>I\nwould have gone for teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q. What was your\nOptional at the Civil Services Examination?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. <\/strong>Sociology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q. How many\nattempts had you made earlier before you got selected?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.<\/strong>\nOne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q. What was your\ncriterion for the selection of the optional subject?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. <\/strong>Short\nsyllabus + guidance availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q. How did you\nprepare for your compulsory papers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. <\/strong>Mainly,\nanswer writing practice and content coverage through NCERTs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q. Do you think that the mindset\nand basic approach of English medium students are fundamentally different from\nthose of the Hindi medium students ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. <\/strong>Very\ninclusive approach, helps Hindi medium students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q. To prepare for\nthis Civil Services Examination, did you join any Coaching Institute(s)? If so,\nname them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. <\/strong>Not\nfor GS papers\/Optional etc., but only test series for Optional at Nice IAS. For\nmock interviews, several institutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q. What do you\nthink is a better way of preparation between selective intensive study and wide\nextensive study?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. <\/strong>Both\nare needed for Mains and Prelims respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.&nbsp;Is this\npattern of the exam appropriate for selection? Would you recommend any other\nimprovement?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. <\/strong>Good\npattern, no change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q. Do you feel that\nthere should be no restriction on the number of attempts&nbsp;?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. <\/strong>There\nshould be a restriction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q. We have been\nawarding CSR Gold Medal to top 50 Rank Holders of CSE who have been our\nreaders. We have been publishing\nessays every month under Current Issues and CSR Essay Contests and CSR Super\nBrain Youth Contest by adding eight more pages to encourage our readers not\nonly to write better, but also to know what the top competitors could be\nwriting.
