He made\nit into the prestigious IAS in his third attempt. Mr. Gupta is a B.Tech. (Civil\nEngineering) from VIT University. He did his schooling from Model School,\nJhajjar, Haryana.&nbsp; He credits hard work,\ndetermination and unconditional support from his parents that had unstintingly\nbacked him during his previous unsuccessful attempts. He has been an avid\nreader of the Competition Success Review during his college days, especially\nduring the long train journeys from Delhi to Vellore, Tamil Nadu.&nbsp; His advice to future aspirants is to \u201ckeep\nbelieving in yourself and your dream because victory belongs to those who\nbelieve in it the most.\u201d<\/strong><strong><s><\/s><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here, we publish an exclusive\ninterview which he gave to Competition Success Review.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CSR\n: What is the secret of your success in the Civil Services Examination?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mr.\nSahil Gupta : <\/strong>Hard work, determination and\nunconditional support from my parents that backed me during my previous\nfailures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nHow much time do you think one requires for serious preparations for this\nexamination?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>I think 12 to 18 months of dedicated hard work\nwith proper guidance makes it possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.&nbsp;Which\njournals have you been reading for the General Studies and other papers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.<\/strong>\nApart from <em>Competition Success Review, General Knowledge Today<\/em> and <em>CSR\nYear Book,<\/em>I am a regular reader of&nbsp;\n<em>The Hindu, Frontline <\/em>and <em>World Focus<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.&nbsp;Do\nyou remember any remarkable incident in your life that motivated or prompted\nyou to go for a career in the Civil Services?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>During my college days, I got inspiration from\nDr. Shah Faesal (AIR-1 CSE 2009).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.&nbsp;Competition\nSuccess Review, the largest selling youth magazine in English for 35 years, has\nbeen extremely helpful because<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>It provides in-depth analysis with broader\ncoverage of topics which help a Civil Services aspirant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nHow did your parents, family and friends contribute to your success?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>Provided unconditional moral support to chase my\ndream and friends acted as stress busters when the going was not great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nHad you not been selected in the Civil Services Examination, what would have\nbeen your reaction? Which other service\/career would you have gone in\/opted\nfor?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>I had thought of teaching civil services\naspirants, in case of not being selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nHow do you visualise your success?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>I believe success and failure are like crest and\ntrough. They will come and go. One must focus on improving processes rather\nthan focusing on outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nWhat were your strong points which enabled you to achieve spectacular success\nin&nbsp; the Civil Services Examination?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>I had good writing skills which helped me secure\ngood marks in CSE Mains 2016. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nWhat was your optional at the Civil Services Examination?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>Political Science and International Relations\n(PSIR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nHow many attempts had you made earlier before you got selected?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.<\/strong> This was my \u2018third\u2019 attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nWhat was your criterion for the selection of the optional subject?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>Personal interest and inclination. Overlapping\nof syllabus with GS-2 Paper of Indian Polity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nHow did you prepare for your compulsory papers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>I took coaching in Delhi during (2013-14). Read\nmagazines like <em>CSR, Yojana, World Focus<\/em> along with <em>The Hindu.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nWhat is your impression about the Interview Board?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>My Board was Vice Air Chief Marshal Bhonsle Sir\nBoard. The Board was cordial but straight-forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nCompetition Success Review has been the largest selling ABC-certified magazine\nin English since 1981. How do you visualise the role of this magazine in\nmoulding the careers of the youth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong><em>Competition Success Review<\/em> is helpful because of the broad contours it covers including Civil\nServices Exam and other state PSC Exams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nHow did Competition Success Review help you in your preparation for the\ninterview?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>Language is simple yet effective. I used to read\ninterview transcripts of other successful candidates from <em>CSR<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nHow do you look upon the publication of CSR magazine in Hindi? Do you think\nthat the mindset and basic approach of English medium students are\nfundamentally different from those of the Hindi medium students ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>I think the Hindi version will improve coverage\nof the rural areas and shall be a boost to Hindi medium students who often do\nnot find relevant material in Hindi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nWhat is your opinion about Competition Success Review? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong><em>Competition Success Review<\/em> is comprehensive, crisp and to the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nSince when have you been reading Competition Success Review&nbsp;?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>Since my college days, especially when I used to\nmake long journeys by train from Delhi to Vellore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nDid your father and\/or mother also read Competition Success Review when they\nwere of your age&nbsp;? But, for Mains, indepth and\nintensive analysis is the key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nHave you been studying alone or in a group ? If you were studying in a group,\nhave your other friends also succeeded ? If so, name them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>Studying alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.&nbsp;Is\nthis pattern of the exam appropriate for selection? Would you recommend any\nother improvement?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>I think the pattern is comprehensive and\nprovides a level playing field for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nDo you feel that there should be no restriction on the number of attempts ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A.\n<\/strong>I think the present restrictions are fair\nbecause one must look forward in life after a certain age with positivity\ndespite failure in CSE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q.\nWe have been awarding CSR Gold Medal to top 50 Rank Holders of CSE who have\nbeen our readers.
