Ms. Anuj Malik has secured the\n16th Rank in the 2016-17 Civil Services Examination (CSE). She is a resident of\nDelhi. Ms. Malik has achieved the rare distinction of clearing and even topping\nthe arduous Civil Services Examination in her first attempt. She credits \u201cpersistent\nhard work and perseverance towards my goal\u201d as the secret of her success in\nCSE. In her view, one year of preparation along with self-study is the optimum\ntime to prepare for the CSE.  Ms. Malik\ncredits her parents, especially her mother for motivating her through her\njourney of Civil Services. She has completed B.Tech from Bharti Vidyapeeth\u2019s\nCollege of Engineering and schooling from Air Force Bal Bharti School. Scoring\n100% marks in Social Studies in school motivated Ms. Malik to go for a career in\nthe Civil Services. To prepare for the CSE, she did self-study and read\nmaterial from General Knowledge Today and Competition Success Review. \u201cWork\nhard and stop not until your goal is reached. Patience always gives great\nresults\u201d, is her advice to Civil Services aspirants. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CSR\n: What is the secret of your success in the Civil Services Examination?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms.\nAnuj Malik : <\/strong>My secret for success is\npersistent hard work and perseverance towards my goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nHow much time do you think one requires for serious preparations for this\nexamination?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>One year of preparation along with self study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q. Which\njournals have you been reading for the General Studies and other papers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.<\/strong> Apart from Competition Success Review, General Knowledge Today<\/em>\nand CSR Year Book,<\/em>I am a regular reader of  The Hindu,
\nThe Indian Express <\/em>and Economic and Political Weekly (EPW)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q. Do\nyou remember any remarkable incident in your life that motivated or prompted\nyou to go for a career in the Civil Services?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>100% score in Social Studies in school motivated\nme to prepare for Civil Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q. Competition\nSuccess Review, the largest selling youth magazine in English for the last 35\nyears, has been extremely helpful because<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>It provides detailed study of current affairs\nand factual knowledge for General Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nHow did your parents, family and friends contribute to your success?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>My parents, especially my mother motivated me\nthrough my journey of Civil Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nHad you not been selected in the Civil Services Examination, what would have\nbeen your reaction? Which other service\/career would you have gone in\/opted\nfor?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>If I would not have been selected then I would\nhave prepared for another attempt for Civil Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nHow do you visualise your success?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>I visualise my success as the fruit of my hard\nwork and a dream come true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nWhat were your strong points which enabled you to achieve spectacular success\nin  the Civil Services Examination?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>My writing skills were structured and well\npresented which helped me score 473 marks in General Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nWhat was your optional at the Civil Services Examination?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>Psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nHow many attempts had you made earlier before you got selected?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.<\/strong> No. It was my 1st attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nWhat was your criterion for the selection of the optional subject?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>My general interest and aptitude for Psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nHow did you prepare for your compulsory papers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>Through standard books, newspapers and other magazines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nWhat is your impression about the Interview Board?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>Interview Board was friendly and supportive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>It helps to give a complete picture of the\ncompetitive exams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nHow do you look upon the publication of CSR magazine in Hindi? Do you think\nthat the mindset and basic approach of English medium students are\nfundamentally different from those of the Hindi medium students ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>CSR magazine in Hindi is the ultimate guide for\nHindi medium. It is the best source for Hindi medium. The mindset and approach\nfor both mediums is almost the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nWhat is your opinion about Competition Success Review? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>Competition \nSuccess  Review<\/em> is a well-structured magazine. It covers every topic in detail. It\nprovides previous years\u2019 questions and motivational articles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nSince when have you been reading Competition Success Review ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>I began reading CSR<\/em> in 2014 when I began\nmy preparation for Civil Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nDid your father and\/or mother also read Competition Success Review when they\nwere of your age ? If so, who read and when ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nWhat is your opinion about General Knowledge Today ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>Yes, it gives great inputs for General Studies\npreparation in Civil Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nTo prepare for this Civil Services Examination, did you join any Coaching\nInstitute(s)? If so, name them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>I did self study and read material from General\nKnowledge Today<\/em> and Competition Success Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nWhat do you think is a better way of preparation between selective intensive\nstudy and wide extensive study?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>Selective intensive study for GS. Extensive\nstudy for optional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nHave you been studying alone or in a group ? If you were studying in a group,\nhave your other friends also succeeded ? If so, name them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>No. I studied alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nIs this pattern of the examination appropriate for selection? Would you\nrecommend any other improvement?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>Yes it is appropriate but more transparency is\nneeded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nDo you feel that there should be no restriction on the number of attempts ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>There should be a restriction of 4 to 6\nattempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.\nWe have been awarding CSR Gold Medal to top Fifty Rank Holders of CSE who have\nbeen our readers. Do you think that our gesture has been a source of\ninspiration for the Civil Services aspirants?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>Yes it is a source of inspiration. A medal helps\nboost our morale and motivates for further hard work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.\n<\/strong>Yes, it can be by declaring marks of not\nselected candidates earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
